How do I know when a girl likes me (teenager)?

My step dad told me that at his high school reunion, girls told him that they liked him in high school, but he never had the initiative. Now, I am in high school and feel like there are girls who like me, but I don't want to be denied by them if I ask...how can I tell if they like me?
