Why were these old ladies making fun of us? Is it race, culture, or what? ?

Okay, so my mom, her friend and I came onto a city bus today to go home and we sat down in front of two ladies [i think a couple] and they were kinda old. They began saying to eachother than theyve never seen a skinny girl with an overweight mother. Right behind us. Just inches away! Whats wrong with skinny or overweight? That made me feel so horrible. They were caucasian and we all were of jamaica origin so my mom and her had thick accents. They even rolled their eyes and scoffed at a hispanic man who couldnt get his money in the slot. They talked about it too. I think they began talking about something I couldnt catch. Was it my new glasses chain? It's beaded and I had just bought it, is there anything wrong with how I looked? Did I look weird? Well, I know I look weird, but does my glasses chain look weird? Was it my earrings they were gawking at? Maybe the beads? Whats wrong with beads?
