A lady at work tried to tell me we are not a country at war what should I tell her?

I am a private about to be shipped off for basic, and she tried to tell me we are not at war. I know stupid right? but in a nice enough way what should I tell her, my reaction if you must know was to scoff and ask her what the hell she thought we were doing over seas and why so many people were dying? I didnt stick around for the answer
