Is it appropriate to ask to job shadow at a position I'm applying for?
It depends on your company culture. If it is a normal practice for applicants to shadow the position they are applying for it is probably ok. What if there are two or more applicants that want to job shadow to show interest, it could put the hiring manager in an awkward position. In other companies there are strict pre-selection policies that frown on anything that may give one candidate an unfair advantage. In that environment shadowing an employee in the position you are applying for would be a prohibited practice. Since your boss and other managers suggested you make the request it is good that you did so. Don't get too upset if your request is not granted. It would be inappropriate for the acting manager who is in the job you want to shadow to make the decision. Perhaps you can discuss it with your boss or the other manager to get their advice. In my opinion you have done all you can do for now. Don't take it as a negative sign if you do not get to shadow the job, there may be a reason the hiring manager wants to ensure there are no complaints filed when a selection is made. Good luck The PracticaL Mentor
